Project history

Vosper-Thornycroft Mk 7 frigate design, slightly larger than the two Iranian Mk 5 and with a different armament.

Modernizations

1983: - 2 x 3 SeaCat SAM, 1 x 3 - 305 Limbo ASWRL, ASW-1, RDL-1 radars, type 185, type 170, type 174 sonars; + 4 x 1 Otomat Mk 2 SSM (4 Otomat Mk 2), 1 x 4 Albatros SAM (4 ASpide), 2 x 3 -3 24 ILAS-3 TT (6 A244), RAN-10S, RAN-12, Decca TM1229, 2x RTN-10X radars, TSM2310 Diodon sonar, RDS-1, INS-1 ECM suites, RAN-12L/X (IPN-10) CCS

Naval service

Dat Assawari was damaged by terrorist bomb 29.10.1980 during a refit in Italy, started in 1979. Ran trials after refit began in March 1983, ship was recommissioned in October 1983 but returned to Libya only in June 1985. During the next refit in Italy ship was transferred incomplete to Tripoli and hulked.
