Project history

The first two units were ordered in 1969 and the third in 1972. Completion of Tonelero was delayed by a serious fire. She was towed to Chatham Dockyard where the centre 18m section was replaced and she was rewired. This lire caused the recabling of all Oberon units then under construction.

Modernizations

None.

Naval service

Tonelero, used for several years for underway training, sank alongside pier at Rio de Janeiro 25.12.2000 during the latter stages of a minor overhaul; the submarine was raised 4.1.2001 but was stricken 21.6.2001.
