Project history

Designed by Vosper Thornycroft and designated Mk 10, this handsome class is unique to the Brazilian Navy. The contract between Vosper Thornycroft Ltd. Portsmouth, and the Brazilian government was announced on 29 September 1970. Under the terms, four ships were to be built in Great Britain and two in Brazil, with materials, equipment, and leadyard services supplied by Vosper Thornycroft. These ships are comparable in size and complexity to the British Type 42, yet the Mk 10 requires a complement of 100 less men. Those ships built in Brazil required much more time to complete.

They were divided into two subtypes, for ASW and general purpose duties, the latter exchanging Ikara system (called Branik in Brazil) and VDS for SSMs and an extra gun.
