Project history

At first the Austrian Navy planned only to purchase plans or building licenses (and some sub-assemblies) of German coastal submarines of the UB I type to build up the U-boat force. However it transpired that AG Weser (Bremen) was able to deliver complete boats within five months; transport to Pola could be effected in sections by railway, so that the units had only to be riveted together. The order was placed on 1 April 1915, the first two boats being commissioned for the Imperial German Navy as UB1 (built by Germaniawerft) and UB15 (Austrian numbers U10, U11) and operated with a German commander and crew but an Austrian officer for pilotage and training reasons until 4 July and 14 June 1915 respectively; they were then taken over by Austrian crews. The three other units were ordered from the beginning as Austrian submarines and never operated under a German crew. All boats differed in their conning tower configuration and some minor layout details.

Naval service

U16 was rammed by the convoyed freighter Borminda, during an attack in which she had torpedoed the escorting Italian destroyer Nembo; she was scuttled after heavy damage. U10 hit a mine on 9 July 1918 off Caorle and was beached with heavy damage. After having been plundered by Austrian Army troops she was towed to Trieste for repair but this was not finished until the end of war. She was ceded with all her sisters to Italy as war reparations in 1920 and scrapped at Pola.
