Project history

Strongly armed purpose-built escorts, originally planned as improved variant of Eolo class minelayers, however finally as the prototype British Black Swan class sloops were chosen. First four Pizarro class gunboats were ordered by the decree from 2.9.1941, second four by the decree from 25.9.1943. They were repeatedly redesigned, building was conducted under project 149B, all armament should be presented by German samples, and main artillery to consist from 3 twin 105mm/60 SKC/33 guns in stabilized DP mounts. Machinery was installed en echelon, similar to used on Jupiter and Eolo classes, but with steam temperature increased to 355°C. Because of fall of Nazi Germany delivery of artillery and part of equipment has not been effected, that has compelled to complete ships already after the Second World War without sonars and with improvised armament.

Modernizations

1952-1954, all: were armed with 3 x 2 - 120/50 NG48, 4 x 2 - 37/83 SK C/30, 6 x 1 - 20/65 C/38, 4 DCT, 1 DCR, 30 mines

1960, Vicente Yáñez Pinzón, Legazpi: were modernized as ASW frigates, armament was consisted of 2 x 1 - 127/38 Mk 30, 4 x 1 - 40/70 SP48, 2 - 324 TR (side, 6), 2 x 24 - 178 Hedgehog ASRL, 8 DCT, 2 DCR; sensors included MLA-1B, SPS-5B, Decca TM626, Mk 29 radars, QHBa sonar

Naval service

In 1958 all were re-rated as frigates. Vicente Yáñez Pinzón was re-rated as patrol in 1974.
