Though basically a mercantile hull, this vessel is interesting as one of the first specialised minelayers built and the first example of a German ship of this type. Laid down in 1889 and completed in October 1891, she was principally intended to transport mines and not lay them, but the mines were carried on deck rails, and could be lowered over the side if required. She was rebuilt in 1908.
