Project history

Courier was really test ship for Thornycroft watertube boiler, she was ordered in 1887. Her steel hull appeared too fragile in service. She had two rudders, one ahead and one aft of the propeller and reached 23.62kts on trials. Courier was designed with 3-masted schooner rig but served only with one mast. Other pair was ordered in 1890 under basically the same design but with heavier scantlings.

Modernizations

None.

Naval service

No significant events.
