Project history

Ordered in 1910 by Argentina, but 9.8.1914 almost completed ships were been requisitioned by France and commissioned by French Navy. They have appeared unsuccessful: their boilers and artillery possessed numerous defects. In 1917 on Téméraire and Opiniâtre boilers were completely replaced by new (one oil-fired originally earmarked for Enseigne Gabolde and three du Temple boilers from battleships Normandie and Gascoyne, number of funnels has thus increased from three to four. But it has not corrected situation: on trials modified ships made 22kts at 12000hp. Similar modernization of two other destroyers has taken place in 1924-1927, and they received boilers from scrapped German destroyers V100 and V126 (Aventurier received 2 Schulz-Thornycroft and one du Temple boiler, Intrépide received three Schulz-Thornycroft). Results have appeared a little bit better, but all the same reached speed (26kts) it was hardly possible to recognize satisfactory. Since 1927 they had only two funnels.

In 1926 all were converted to fast minesweepers.

Modernizations 12.

1914, all: taken new armament consisted of 4 x 1 - 100/45 M1893, 1 x 1 - 47/50 M1902 AA, 4 x 1 - 450 TT

1917, Téméraire, Opiniâtre: were reboilered with 1 Normand oil-fired and 3 Du Temple boilers, one additional funnel was fitted, 12000hp, 22kts.

1926, all: were converted to fast minesweepers: - 1 x 1 - 100/45, 4 x 1 - 450 TT; + mechanical minesweeping gear

1927, Aventurier: was reboilered with 2 Schultz-Thornycroft and 1 Du Temple boilers, 26kts. One funnel was removed.

1927, Intrépide: was reboilered with 3 Schultz-Thornycroft boilers, 26kts. One funnel was removed.
