Although Marinette ordered the Lerici in 1983, these ships are being built by a combination of Intermarine and Hercules Powder. Displacement grew by 110t during final design, and production was well behind schedule.
In contrast to an MCM, which can carry both hunting (SLQ-48) and sweeping gear, an MHC can carry only one or the other. Later units will be modified internally for easier deployment overseas, but they will not be enlarged to accommodate both sweep and hunting gear. Because they were conceived as single-role minehunters, the MHCs lack the generating capacity to operate influence sweeps. Development of the Modular Influence Minesweeping System (MIMS) with own gas-turbine sweep generator and SLQ-53 Single-Ship Deep Sweep (SSDS) for these ships was abandoned.
