Probably the greatest disappointment of the early postwar amphibious programme was the failure to develop a fast LST. Quite radical schemes were tried, including a design with bow propellers, which would turn its blunt stern to the beach, and one with a long false bow. Instead, a maximun speed of 15kts was accepted, and these fifteen ships were modified experimental units (LST1153 and 1154) laid down at the end of the Second World War, with diesel plants replacing the steam engines of the earlier ships. All had increased troop accommodation, greater tank and cargo capacity and improved discharge arrangements as compared to wartime LSTs. Thus they had a powered vehicle turntable, hydraulic bow doors, heavier ramps, and pontoon causeways. Their hull lines were also finer than those of earlier LSTs, and they had reversible pitch propellers.
The entire LST1156 class was authorised (as SCB-9) under the FY52 programme, as part of the renaissance of the amphibious force after the demonstration of its continued value during the Korean War
1950s, all: - 5 x 1 - 20/70
1973, Washtenaw County: was converted to 'special device minesweeper' (MSS), some kind of renaissance of WWII-era mine destructor vessel and was used for sweeping fairwaters in Vietnam.
