The class replaced the LKAs, LPDs, LSD36 class and Newport class LSTs. Intended for 40-years service. The docking well is about the size (75x20m) of that on the LPD4 class and can accommodate 2 LCAC or 1 LCU and 14 amphibious assault vehicles. The two-part stern gate covers an opening 23.8m wide by 10.7m high. There are two spots for helicopters of up to CH-53E size. Three AH-1Z or four CH-46E or one CH-53E or two MH-22 can be accommodated in hangar, ship can also support AV-8B Harrier VSTOL attackers. Cargo vilume is 963m³ with 2323m² of vehicle space on three decks and 708m³ of palletized ammunition cargo space. Ship can also has 1007m³ cargo ammunition magazines and 1196m³ tanks for JP-5 aviation fuel and 38m³ for cargo gasoline. Medical facilities include 24 beds, two operating rooms and space for additional 100 casualties. The hull is shaped to reduce radar cross-section, which is said to be 1% of that of the LPD4. Can carry two 7m and one 11m RIB-type ship's boats, can also additionally carry two special forces RIBs.
All have ACDS (Advanced Combat Direction System) Block I, JMCIS (Joint Maritime Command Information System), KSQ-1 AADS amphibious assault direction system, Mk 2 Ship Self-Defence System (SSDS), Global Command Control System Maritime (GCCSM), Naval Tactical Command Support System (NTCSS), and the Integrated Combat Direction System (ICDS).
