Project history

The construction of these ships showed, in effect, that the LPD could not quite combine all the capabilities required by the Amphibious Force. Five were built under the FY65 (one), FY66 (three) and FY67 (one) programme. Like their Thomaston class predecessors, they have a removable helicopter deck, no helicopter maintenance facilities, and limited troop space (375 men). The 131.1x15.2m well deck accommodates three LCU or nine LCM (8) or about fifty LVT, also there is 1115m² vehicle parking space. Later ships of Anchorage class can carry 3 LCAC.
