Project history

Out of the last 26 'R' class ordered in March 1916 only 15 were completed to the original design. Despite all the minor improvements reports from the various commands and flotillas showed that bridges needed to be as far aft as possible, to protect personnel, and hulls needed to be stronger to cope with the exceptional stresses of constant hard driving in heavy weather. The 'Modifed R' class had No 1 and No 2 boiler rooms transposed, allowing the uptakes to be combined in one fatter funnel and making space for the forward gun and bridge to be moved aft. New CP.III 102mm mountings had 30° elevation, increasing range from 9,100m to 10,900m. Trenchant, the lead-ship, and her sister Tristram had their funnels made on thin plating, with distinctive ribs to strengthen them. Undine made 36.5kts on trials, in light condition.
