Project history

Before the Havock had completed it was decided to order another six destroyers from Thornycroft and Yarrow. Another nine were ordered from other builders making up, a few months later, the 1893/94 Programme. Apart from a slight increase in size the main difference was that the gun armament was increased by 2 57mm guns. The first six (the Thornycroft and Yarrow boats) had a bow tube fitted, but it was found to throw up clouds of spray in anything except a flat calm, had a bad effect on seakeeping and was soon removed.     This pair were the only destroyers built with one funnel until the Italians built some in the 1930s. They were also quite the most unsuccessful of the 27-knotters, and their complete failure to meet the contract speed finally drove their builder out of business. They had to be reboilered, and even then could only make26kts. The reboilering meant that they eventually entered service as four funnelled ships.

Modernizations

1908, both: boilers were replaced by 4 Reed, 3800hp, 27kts, single funnel was replaced by four.

1916, both: + 2 DCR
