Project history

21-gun 1st class corvettes. Wooden hull. Surveyor's Department design, approved in 1849. Highflyer was originally ordered at Woolwich DYd (Chatham DYd from 1849) in 1847 as 3rd class screw sloop. Final design was approved in 1849, she was redesignated as 5th rate frigate in 1852. Esk was ordered in 1850 from Deptford DYd but in 1852 this was replaced by order for sloop Fawn. Esk was built in exchange for the iron frigate Greenock by Scott Russell.
