Project history

50-gun 4th rate 32pdr frigates. Sir William Symonds design of 1843. One more ship, Liffey, was ordered but reordered in 1851 before the kiel was laid down.

Modernizations

1850s, all: - 10 x 1 - 163/18 32pdr 56cwt; + 10 x 1 - 204/13 68pdr 65cwt shell SBML

1861, Octavia, Arethusa; 1862, Constance: were converted to screw frigates with data as given in the table

by 1868, all: were armed with 4 x 1 - 178/18 7'' 6½ton shell SBML, 24 x 1 - 160/16 64pdr 64cwt SBML
