Project history

Almost identical with the RN Rothesay class, but having twin Bofors instead of single.

Modernizations

1970, President Pretorius; 1971, President Steyn: masts were plated; - 1 x 2 - 40/60, 1 x 3 - 305 Limbo ASWRL, type 277Q radars; + 2 x 1 - 40/60 Mk 9, 1 helicopter (Wasp) with hangar, Jupiter, NA9C radars

1972, all: + 2 x 3 - 324 TT, UA-8, UA-9 ECM suites

1977, President Kruger: masts were plated; - 1 x 2 - 40/60, 1 x 3 - 305 Limbo ASWRL, type 277Q radar; + 2 x 1 - 40/60 Mk 9, 1 helicopter (Wasp) with hangar, Jupiter radar, UA-8, UA-9 ECM suites

1979, President Kruger: - type 275 radar; + NA9C radar

Naval service

President Steyn was decommissioned in August 1980 to be cannibalized for her sisters. President Kruger was lost 80nm SW of the Cape of the Good Hope 18.2.1982 in a night collision with the repenishment ship Tafelberg.
