The Project 264 TTZ was approved in 1949. The objective was increased sweep capacity, using improved influence sweeps and a better mechanical sweep deployable al a higher speed. The new design would also have better self-defence weapons and electronics, including sonar. The basis arrangement of Project 254 was unchanged, but power-to-weight ratio had to be doubled. Unlike the powerplant of a Project 254 ship, in this case the powerplant was on two levels, to minimize its length. As in the earlier design, there was no special provision to minimize acoustic or pressure signature.
Production units were Protect 264A, with better protection against nuclear attack, as well as new sweeps.
These ships were reclassified as patrol ships in 1975.
1975, all: minesweeping equipment was removed.
