Project history

Former Dutch De Ruyter class cruisers. After sale to Peru Aguirre had her Terrier missile system removed and she was converted into a helicopter cruiser with 35x17m flight deck and large 20.5x16.5m hangar capable of operating up to three Agusta ASH-3D Sea King helicopters armed with AM39 Exocet missiles. Conversion was completed on 31 October 1977. Almirante Grau was commissioned 23.5.1973.

Protection

75mm armoured belt protected a hull between end barbettes and was closed by 50mm bulkheads. Ship ends were protected by narrower 50mm belt. Flat 30 - 20mm deck was connected with upper edge of the belt. Turrets had 100mm faces and 50mm protection from other directions.
