Laid down as tugs, but in 1918 during building converted to minesweepers, becoming the first ships of the given type in the Dutch Navy. To the Second World War beginning they were considered become outdated since could struggle only with contact mines.

M2 was lost 13.5.1940 on non-contact mine; remaining ships were scuttled at Ijmuiden next day. M1, M2 and M4 were salvaged by Germans and commissioned by Kriegsmarine. M1 became hospital ship LAZ46, then tug ZRD5 and BS10; in 1945 she was returned to the Netherlands and commissioned as tug RS21, 23.12.1949 she foundered during a storm at Borkum. M2 was used as hospital ship LAZ47. She foundered during a storm 17.9.1940, again salvaged, repaired and transferred to the private owner as a tug Fairplay X, handed over on demolition at Lübeck in July, 1965. M4 was used by Germans as tug ZRD57, then BS9; in 1945 she was returned to the Netherlands and commissioned as tug RS23, then A847 and Y8262. She was handed over on demolition 10.3.1992.
