Project history

What had been intended as a repeat Rotterdam (L 800) transformed into a larger vessel intended to transport logistic and combat support elements of a Royal Netherlands Marine battalion, whereas the earlier Rotterdam can carry the combat units when both ships are available. Originally known as the ATS-2-class, the vessel has facilities for 400 flag and force command personnel and can be used for humanitarian operations, disaster relief, and emergency evacuations. The hull was constructed at Damen Shipyard Galatz, Romania. The design is an enlarged version of the Rotterdam able to dock British LCU Mk 10 landing craft and operate four British Army EH.101 heavy-lift or six NH90 medium helicopters. The docking well (575m²) is 1m broader but considerably shorter than the one in Rotterdam while the superstructure is enlarged to accommodate the command facilities, and the flight deck (58x25m) has been strengthened; 4 LCA-class landing craft can be stowed in davits and two LCU in the docking well. A large medical complex, including an operating theater, is fitted. Helicopter hangar has 600m² area, vehicle parking space has 2100m² area and can accommodate 33 main battle tanks or 170 other vehicles. There is one 25t crane.
