Further development of idea of multipurpose ship, included in Guanajuato class. At expense of some hull increasing, introduction of extended forecastle and decreasing of armament, capacity was raised twice, to 490 infantrymen and 80 horses with landing and unlanding through two sideports. Number of 102mm guns was shrank to two, but two additional 57mm guns were installed abreast funnel. Machinery structure remained unchanged, but for preservation of 20kts speed machinery power was raised to 6500hp. Sister-ships Durango and Zacatecas were ordered to Spanish builders in 1932. Officially they were classified as military transports (Transporte de Guerra). Durango was commissioned in 1936; Zacatecas outfitted in 1936, was requisitioned by National government of Spain and in 1938 was commissioned by Franco`s fleet as Calvo Sotelo, though officially it was issued only 30.5.1938.

In post-war years Durango was repeatedly updated; she served till 2001, when she was preserved at Masatlan as memorial.
