Project history

Initially dubbed the Future Frigate Experimental (FFX). Contract signed late 2008. As many 19 of the class were planned for acquisition through 2020 with the first six to serve as replacements for the Ulsan-class frigates and the remaining 13 (Daegu class) as replacement for the Pohang-class corvettes. The class is optimized for ASW with a secondary anti-surface role or possibly land-attack operations through the replacement of four antiship missiles with Cheon Ryong land-attack cruise missiles.
