Project history

A development of the Uzushio class, with a deeper diving capability and improved electronics. Carried ZQQ-4 bow sonar, a modified version of BQS-4. Nadashio was the first unit to be fitted with ZQR-1 towed array sonar in 1987.

1996, Yushio; 1997, Mochishio; 1999, Setoshio; 2000, Hamashio; 2001, Okishio; 2006, Yukishio: as TS carried only 4 torpedoes, SQS-36(J) and ZQR-1 sonar arrays were removed, 60 crewmembers + 20 trainees.
