The first teardrop-hull submarines produced by Japan. These boats had double hulls, a bow sonar array and torpedo tubes amidships; NS-63 high-tensile steel was used in the hull shell in order to permit greater diving depth (200m). The class was equipped with a separate emergency blowing system which enables the submarine to surface rapidly. A three-dimensional automatic steering system, consisting of a combination of automatic depth-maintenance system and automatic direction-maintenance system was installed. The ATSS (Auxiliary Training Submarines) are used for experimental trials as well as training.
