Project history

Built under 3rd Supplementary programme of 1937. Development of Okinoshima, differed by armament structure: at the expense of fitting of lighter dual-purpose 127mm guns instead of 140mm, mine capacity has been raised from 500 to 600. Standard seaplane was E7K.

Modernizations

1943-1944: - 2 x 2 - 25/60, 1 seaplane, 1 catapult; + 7 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 4 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, 3-shiki 1-go radar (presumably), 93-shiki hydrophone

Naval service

5.8.1943 Tsugaru was damaged by US submarine Silversides, 21.6.1944 she was damaged by Dutch submarine KXIV, 29.6.1944 she was sunk W off Morotai by US submarine Darter.
