Project history

Two units of the Ishikari class were originally authorised, one in 1977-78 and the second n 1979-80, but only one was built. As many as twenty were planned. This design was smaller and less sophisticated than the preceding Chikugo class, but too much seems to have been attempted on the displacement - hence the curtailment of the programme, and the evolution of the Yubari design.

Modernizations

None.

Naval service

No significant events.
