Project history

Development of 600t Argonauta class, with a little larger displacement and changed hull form, become more shortly and more widely. The out-of-date 102mm/35 gun was replaced by more modern 100mm/47. In remaining they differed from predecessors a little.

Naval service

Diamante was sunk 20.6.1940 near Tobruk by British submarine Parthian. Rubino was sunk 29.6.1940 in Ionian sea by British aircraft. Naiade was sunk 14.12.1940 near Bardia by DCs of British destroyers Hereward and Hyperion. Anfitrite was sunk 6.3.1941 off Crete by DCs and gunfire of British destroyer Greyhound. Zaffiro was lost in June, 1942, probably, sunk 9.6.1942 by British aircraft. Ondina was sunk 11.7.1942 near Beirut by South African armed whalers Protea and Southern Maid. Nereide was sunk 13.7.1943 near Augusta by DCs and gunfire of British destroyers Echo and Ilex. Smeraldo was lost in September, 1943 in Mediterranean sea by unknown reason. Sirena was scuttled by crew 9.9.1943 in La Spezia harbour. Topazio was erroneously sunk 12.9.1943 at SE coast of Sardinia by British aircraft. Ametista was scuttled by crew 12.9.1943 near Ancona.
