Project history

FREMM = Fregata Europee Multi-Missione. Approval was given by the Italian parliament in 2002 for a Franco-Italian frigate program to construct 10 general-purpose guided-missile frigates to replace the Maestrale and Lupo classes, employing elements of the Horizon design but emphasizing an ASW capability. Under 2002 agreement, the design and construction of this class was conducted in close cooperation with France. Current plans call for 6 Italian frigates to be built in general-purpose/land-attack configuration and 4 others to be optimized for ASW. The Italian ships differ from their French counterparts in having been fitted with controllable-pitch propellers and constructed with one additional deck. A particular effort has been made to reduce the ships' signatures, including engine rafting for quieting and exhaust cooling to decrease IR signature. Ships are constructed at Fincantieri's Riva Trigoso shipyard with fitting out completed at the Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia.

All are fitted with 16 VLS cells for Aster-15 or Aster-30 surface-to-air missiles; GP/land-attack variant carry 8 Teseo Mk 2 SSMs, 1127mm gun (for which the extended-range Vulcano land-attack munition is under development) and 2 76mm guns; ASW variants carry 4 Teseo Mk 2 SSMs, 4 Milas antisubmarine missiles and additional sonar systems including the UMS 4229 active/passive towed array sonar. General-purpose variants also are able to launch and recover 11-meter RIBs from the stern and 7-meter RIBs over the side.
