Project history

Split was laid down in Split for Yugoslavian Navy, seized by Italians on the stocks 18.4.1941, renamed Spalato and launched 18.7.1943. Incomplete ship was scuttled in the Yard dock 20.9.1943 by Yugoslavian partisans, but later captured by Germans and salvaged by them in 1944. Hull was scuttled again in October 1944 by Germans but salvaged again after war, introduced in 1950 into the dry dock in Rijeka and commissioned finally in 1959, 20 years after she was laid down.
