Designed by Eng Insp Carlo Vigna, this class was an improved version of Tripoli and an economical type of small, steel-hulled cruiser. They originally had a fore and aft rig, with 2 masts.

Partenope was sunk by gunfire of German submarine UC67 23.3.1918 off Tunisia.
