Project history

Designed by Eng Insp Carlo Vigna, this class was an improved version of Tripoli and an economical type of small, steel-hulled cruiser. They originally had a fore and aft rig, with 2 masts.

Modernizations

1906-08, Partenope; 1909-10, Minerva: were reboilered with oil-firing boilers (Partenope 2481hp, 17.1kts, Minerva 3524hp, 18.3kts) and converted to minelayers, armament consisted of 2 x 1 - 76/40 A, 4 x 1 - 57/43 N, 2 x 1 - 37/20 H corto, 20 mines

Naval service

Partenope was sunk by gunfire of German submarine UC67 23.3.1918 off Tunisia.
