Project history

IKL Type 800, built for replacement of Type 500 submarines. At first they were authorized in 1988 but project was cancelled in 1990. Originally two submarines were to be assembled at Ingalls in Pascagoula using sections prefabricated by HDW. In January 1991 the project was revived when the German government offered to built two submarines fully in Germany with German combat systems, in 1995 the third submarine was reinstated. Equipped with swimmer lockout facilities in the sail and boat stowage for eight special forces personnel. Torpedo tubes are arranged in two horizontal rows with 650mm tubes outboard. At least one 650mm tube can be used for swimmer exit and ingress, torpedoes are launched from 650mm tubes by means of liners. May be carry Turbo Popeye nuclear cruise missiles, launched from 650mm tubes, and Triton ant-helicopter missiles.
