A Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft of Kiel design. The Indian Navy finally signed a contract for four boats on 11 December 1981, with the first pair built in Germany and the second pair to be assembled at Mazagon, Bombay. The project suffered lengthy delays because all materials had to be imported and workers had to be trained. These delays lead to plans to build a further two boats being dropped and Soviet-built Project 877 being acquired instead.
These vessels are unique in being fitted with the IKL rescue sphere, capable of evacuating the entire crew.
