Project history

Negotiations with Russia for a 10-year "lease with the option to buy" of a Project 971 nuclear-powered attack submarine have reportedly been under way since at least 1999. Though initially rejected by India, negotiations on the lease of up to two submarines were soon renewed between the two nations due to slippages in development and construction of the Indian ATV program. By late 2005, 300 Indian naval personnel had arrived in Russia to begin training for future service aboard the submarine Nerpa. The program suffered a major setback during November 2008 when the Nerpa was undergoing trials prior to its turnover to India. A fire extinguishing system on board the vessel malfunctioned, killing 20 Russian members of the crew and injuring many others. This placed an indefinite hold on the boat's transfer, which was not finalized until September 2011 with the submarine arriving in Indian waters during October. Submarine was reconstructed under special export project 971I before transfer: 650mm weapon all were landed, but 533mm ammunition stowage was enlarged. Wake detector wasn't installed.
