Project history

During 1999, approval was given to begin construction of the first of three Project 17 "stealth" frigates of Indian design. The initial construction schedule was overly optimistic, calling for the first of the class to enter service by 2005, which was later delayed to 2010. Work on fabricating modules for the first unit began in 2000. Severnoye Design Bureau, Russia, and DCN, France, reportedly provided design and technical assistance, with the basic configuration being that of a much-enlarged version of the Talwar class. The final seven units of the class are designated Project 17A and were approved during 2009. Current plans call for three of the Project 17A ships to be built by Garden Reach SB & Eng. and four to be built at Mazagon Dockyard. They will be distinguished by new 3D radar and BrahMos missiles instead Club-N.
