Project history

Ordered in 1986 as replacements for the U.S. LST1/511 class. The program was considerably delayed by the builder's financial troubles, with the last ship originally scheduled to complete in September 1990. Have a raised helicopter deck aft capable of supporting one Agusta-Bell AB-212B helicopter. The bow ramp is capable of supporting 55t vehicles; there is also a stern loading ramp and a ramp from the upper deck amidships to the tank deck.
