Project history

The design for this class was based on the German war-built LS claw light MTBs intended primarily to operate from commerce raiders, and successfully employed by the Kriegsmarine in the Aegean in 1944. The geographical and hydrometeorological conditions in the western part of the Baltic lend themselves to surprise operations carried out by small, ultra-fast FACs both in defensive and offensive roles. The prototypes were ordered simultaneously in June 1958 in four yards, using a variety of hull materials and construction techniques. Peenewerft (design codenamed 'litis' or 'Project 63') and Rosslauer Schiffswerft (design of hydrofoil boat 'Project 81') prepared hulls with aluminium alloy AlMg 4.5, and Yachtwerft, Berlin, built wooden hulls with aluminium alloy frames (design codenamed 'Hydra'). The fourth hull, designed by Boots und Reparaturwerft, Greifswald, was to be made of GRP (codename 'Möwe' Project 58) but did not get further than the planning stage.
