Project history

War orders J (UB48-71), O (UB72-87), Q (UB88-132), T (UB133-169), W (UB170-205) and AB (UB206-249). These UB III type boats in fact constituted many different sub-groups, varying slightly in dimensions and machinery (MAN, AEG, Kortingor Benz). The design was essentially a reduced version of the Ms type, with a double hull and a diving depth of 50m. U176, 177, 184-195 and 206-249 were cancelled before their building started.

UB109 was mined in the English Channel 29.8.1918. UB110 was sunk by British destroyer Garry and motor launches ML49 and ML263 19.7.1918 in the North Sea. UB113 was lost by unknown cause in the North Sea in September-October 1918. UB114 capsized in Kiel Bight during stability test, salvaged and transferred to France in November 1918. UB115 was sunk by British destroyers Ouse and Star  and 6 trawlers or airship R29 29.9.1918 in the North Sea. UB116 was mined off Orkney Islands 28.10.1918. UB119 was lost in May 1918 in North Sea, probably mined. UB123 was mined on Northern Barrage in the North Sea 19.10.1918. UB124 was sunk in the Irish Sea 20.7.1918 by British destroyers Marne, Milbrook and Pigeon. UB127 was mined on the Northern Barrage in North Sea in September 1918. UB129 was scuttled at Fiume 31.10.1918. UB143 was interned 13.11.1918 at Karlskrona (Sweden) and in December transferred to Japan. UB148 was interned 13.11.1918 at Karlskrona and transferred in December to United States.
