Project history

Medium coastal submarines. Double-hulled. First diesel-powered German submarines and first armed with 50cm torpedoes.

Naval service

U20 wrecked 5.11.1916 at Jutland coast. U21 temporary was transferred to Austro-Hungarian Navy as U36 and based at Pola. She was lost by unknown cause on transfer route in the North Sea 22.2.1919.
