Project history

War order N (U142-150), U (U173-176) and Z (U183 and later). Double-hulled. They had a diving time of 40 seconds (30 seconds from U173). 'Project 46A' (improved 'Project 46') boats, with increased surface speed. CT had 30mm sides and 60mm roof. Munition hoists had 25mm protection. U196-198 and 200 (Weser, Bremen) were cancelled before they were laid down.
