Project history

The Type 206 boats were designed by the IKL in 1964-65, U25-U30 being the replacement units for the Type 205 boats U4-U8. In April 1969 the orders for U13-U24 and in autumn 1970 those for U25-U30 were placed. The general interior arrangement resembles that of the Types 201 and 205, the only visual difference being a rounded bow with sonar dome. Improvements were the use of wire-guided torpedoes, decreased underwater noise, better steering and higher underwater manoeuvrability.

In addition to the sixteen mines that can be carried in lieu of the torpedoes, this class can carry twenty-four extra mines in a pair of external GRP containers. This ingenious system was developed by IKL to allow the submarines to embark both torpedoes and mines simultaneously if required.
