Project history

Approval for construction given in 1996 for three, with option for a fourth (to be named F222Thüringen but very unlikely to be built). The building yards formed the AHGE-124 consortium under the leadership of Blohm + Voss. Designed to have as much commonality as possible with the Type 123 but have enhanced signature-reduction features. Are of all-steel construction and employ the MEKO modular equipment installation concept. Some 270t of growth margin are built into the design. Accommodations for a task group commander and staff are fitted, and provision is made for female crewmembers. Have rudder roll-rate stabilization system, using the single rudder. Turning radius is about 570 m, and the ships will be able to operate helicopters weighing up to 15 tons in Sea State 6. The unusual propulsion plant employs a cross-connected gearbox, and the entire engineering plant has an integrated monitoring system. The gas turbine engine is installed within a special MTU-designed sound-quieting module. Have the same three-box-girder hull strength feature as Type 123 and seven main watertight compartments.

Modernizations
