Project history

Belonged to the wartime mobilization programme, S49 and S50 being the replacements for S35 and S36. The enlarged S53-66 had a cruising turbine on the starboard shaft and carried more oil.

Modernizations

1916, S53-56: - 3 x 1 - 88/42; + 3 x 1 - 105/42 Utof L/45 C/16 or TK L/45 C/16

Naval service

S62 was lost in action; S57 (10.11.1916), S58 (11.11.1916), S59 (11.11.1916) were mined in the Gulf of Finland, S64 was mined in Northern Baltic 18.10.1917, S66 was mined in the North Sea 10.7.1918. S61 was scuttled during the German retreat from Belgium 2.11.1918 in Terneuzen Canal (Flanders); S60 which was beached at Scapa Flow became a Japanese war reparation and was scrapped in England in 1920; S63 became an Italian war reparation and served under the name Ardimentoso until 1937.
