Project history

The steel-hulled Type 148 missile-firing attack craft were a modified French 'La Combattante II' type, which in turn was based on a Lürssen design. Orders placed on 18 December 1970, based on a German-French contract of 23 October 1970. These boats were to replace the Jaguar class (Type 140). Under the project management of the Direction Technique des Constructions Navales (DTCN) of the French Ministry of Defence, the main shipyard employed was Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN).

S 46, S 4S, S 50, S 52, S 54, S 56, S 58 and 5 60 were fitted out by Lürssen, the hulls having been brought from Cherbourg to Germany.
