Project history

Successor to the Sous-Marins d'Attaque Future (SMAF) program. Feasibility studies began in 1998; the first submarine was to have been ordered in 2001, but that was delayed to 2006. The class will be deeper diving than the Améthyste class and will be equipped with improved combat systems and improved sound damping. Will be entirely a French design and will be faster than current French SSNs. The first was originally to have been delivered in 2010, but several years were lost in programming delays. May be fitted to operate up to a dozen special operations personnel deployed from a dry dock shelter. Increased automation levels allow for crew reduction to 60 personnel. The reactor design will be based on that of the K15 pressurized water reactor providing 10 years between refuelings: will use electric propulsion for cruising speeds and geared turbines for maximum speeds. Stern planes are X-configuration. Will have the DCN SYCOBS (SYsteme de Combat pour Barracuda et SSBN) combat system. Thales Underwater Systems will provide the sonar suite, which will include bow, wide-angle aperture flank, and thin-line towed passive arrays.
