Project history

Prompted by the requirement to replace the destroyers of the T 47 and T 53 classes, the C 70 project aimed to provide a common hull and propulsion system for two distinct classes; one to provide ASW protection for the fleet, and the other to provide area air defence. In the event it proved difficult to achieve the degree of commonality desired, and the final designs share only a common hull.

Six ASW vessels were laid down before construction was begun on the first of the AAW ships. The destroyers of the Georges Leygues class incorporate many of the features of the F 67 type, but on a reduced displacement. They have adopted the full-width hangar and have identical helicopter handling facilities. They also carry the same outfit of sensors, although a SENIT 4 tactical data system, using more advanced computers and all-French components, superseded the SENIT 3 system of their predecessors. The reduction in length meant only a single 100mm gun mounting forward, and Malafon had to be abandoned because of the adoption of gas turbine main propulsion machinery, which required large air intakes and exhaust uptakes amidships.

The adoption of gas turbines was influenced by developments in the Royal Navy and the Royal Netherlands Navy. However, only the Olympus half of the Olympus/Tyne COGOG package adopted by the latter navies was acceptable, as it was felt that the Tyne lacked sufficient power for running astern, particularly in the tropics, and was also expensive to run at cruising speed. SEMT-Pielstick diesels were adopted instead, and coupled with the Olympus main turbines in a CODOG arrangement.
