Project history

An iron-hulled cruiser, sheathed and coppered, with a pronounced curved ram bow and overhanging stem. She was rigged as a ship, later as a barque, with two funnels between the fore-and mainmasts, and had a short forecastle. There was a double bottom with 8 watertight transverse bulkheads and a collision bulkhead. The height between decks was small. The guns were on the upper deck with one 194mm under the forecastle and four in sponsons, while there was one stern 139mm and the rest on the broadside. The 7.6in were later replaced by 6.4in M1881 and the 10 revolvers reduced lo 5 with 4-3pdr added.

Naval service

The Duguay-Trouin was renamed Vétéran when hulked, and the transport Tonquin took her name as a TS.
