Project history

These ships, the most numerous class of French battleships, were ordered as improved Gloire on 16.11.1860. All were wooden hulled. In Flandre and Provence the two howitzers and two 165mm guns were on the upper deck, as were four 194mm in the rest of the class. There was little point in fitting compound engines with 1.8 kgf/m² boiler pressure and jet condensers, and single expansion engines worked better. Metacentric height was about 1.4m, and the class were generally barque-rigged with about 1950 m² of sail.

Ship protection

The sides were completely armoured above water with 150mm iron on 750mm wood backing, battery had 110mm iron protection on the 610mm wood backing. The CT was apparently roofed and had 100mm sides.

Modernizations

1868, Revanche, Valereuse: - 6 x 1 - 194/19; + 4 x 1 - 240/18 M1864-66 MLR

1869-1870, Provence, Flandre, Savoie, Magnanime, Surveillante were armed with 8 x 1 - 240/18 M1864-66 MLR, 4 x 1 - 194/19 M1864-66 MLR

Naval service

The breech blew off a 240mm gun in Valeureuse in 1870, and a bad boiler explosion occurred in Revanche in 1877.
