Project history

Iron-hulled floating batteries differing from previous classes in having a central casemate with 9 gunports a side and 3 at each end. The battery height was 1.45m (1.32m in service) and there was a single funnel with a light fore and aft rig on two masts.

Ship protection

Sides were protected by 120mm iron with 400mm wood backing on 12mm iron plating at wl, battery had 110mm armour on 400mm wood on 12mm iron plating.

Naval service

Arrogante swamped and sank in squall 19.3.1879 at La Badine, salvaged in May and repaired.
