Project history

This class of iron-hulled floating batteries were shorter and had more beam than the Arrogante, and differed also in that the battery was continued to the ends. There were 2 gunports at both bow and stern and 6 on either beam with a battery height of 1.4m.

Ship protection

Sides were protected by 140mm iron with 400mm wood backing on 10mm iron plating at wl, battery had 110mm armour on 400mm wood on 10mm iron plating.

Naval service

Protectrice rammed a pier and sank in 1871, later salvaged and repaired.
